It sits on the banks of the Kirtankhola river. This city serves as the administrative headquarters for both the Barisal District and the Barisal Division. Because of its vast network of waterways, people once called it the Venice of the East. The city covers an area of 58 square kilometers. It is a vital economic center for the nation. In fact, it is the third largest financial hub in Bangladesh, following Dhaka and Chittagong.

The geography of Barisal is defined by its relationship with water. The land itself was formed over millennia through fluvial aggradation. This is a process where rivers deposit sediment to build up the land. The Padma, Jamuna, and Meghna rivers carried sediment from the Himalayas to this region. This created fertile alluvial soil through tidal action and river movement. Several other rivers, such as the Arial Khan and the Sandha, flow through the area. This makes the waterways essential for local transportation and daily life.

The name Barisal has a fascinating etymological origin. It is believed to come from the Perso-Arabic phrase "Bahr-e-Sawal," meaning "the ship of questions." This name relates to the history of Semitic Arab maritime traders. These traders used vessels they called "bahr." The southern seacoast of Bengal was known for its treacherous waves and turbulent waters. When traders encountered these dangerous routes, they would ask many questions about safety and navigability. Over time, this phrase evolved into the name we use today.

Barisal has a history that stretches back to ancient times. The region was once part of the Gangaridai kingdom. Greco-Roman writers like Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy described this deltaic state. They recorded that the kingdom could field 200,000 infantry and 4,000 war elephants. During the medieval period, the area was part of the Bengal Sultanate. This occurred after Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji conquered East Bengal in 1204 CE. Later, the region was part of the British administration under the Bengal Presidency.

The city has seen many structural and political changes. In 1876, Barisal was formally established as a municipality. On July 25, 2002, it was upgraded to a City Corporation. The population has grown significantly over the years. According to the 2023 national census, the population was approximately 533,000 people. The city is organized into 30 wards and 50 mahallas.
