The city is situated directly on the banks of the Titas River. To the west of the city lies the Meghna River.

The climate in Brahmanbaria is classified as tropical wet and dry. This means the area experiences distinct wet and dry periods throughout the year. The city is a vital economic hub due to its natural resources. Specifically, the Titash Gas Field is located within Brahmanbaria. This is the largest gas field in the entire country of Bangladesh. The city is also organized into 12 different wards for local administration. This structure helps manage the growing urban population.

There are several theories regarding the origin of the name Brahmanbaria. One historical account links the name to the Sen dynasty. During this time, a shortage of Brahmins caused difficulties for religious worship. To solve this, King Lakshman Sen brought Brahmin families to the area. These families came from a place known as Kanyakunj in Adisur. As these families built their homes in the area, the location became known as Brahmanbaria. This name reflects the presence of the Brahmins' houses.

The history of the city includes significant administrative and military milestones. Brahmanbaria was established as a municipality in 1868. This makes it one of the oldest municipalities in Bangladesh. Later, in 1984, the city was officially declared a district headquarters. The city also played a role during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. This war led to the liberation of Bangladesh. During the conflict, Pakistan Army planners expected an attack along the Akhaura–Brahmanbaria axis.

Specifically, the city itself had 264,341 residents and 56,898 households. The sex ratio was recorded at 96.44 females for every 100 males. Education is also a strong feature of the community.
