The history of Savar reaches back to ancient times. Some believe the name evolved from the 7th or 8th-century township of Shôrbeshshôr. This name means "Lord of everything." Another possible origin is the name Shômbhar. These ancient places sat on the banks of the Bangshi River. Some historians believe these sites were part of the ancient Sambagh Kingdom. Local legends and archaeological finds help us piece together this long past.

Archaeology and legends offer different views of ancient rulers. Local stories mention a king named Raja Harishchandra Pal of the Pala dynasty. An old shloka describes him as a king who conquered heaven. Other historical records come from a burnt brick fragment. This fragment contains an inscription from 869 CE. It mentions King Mahendra, who dedicated a matha, or religious building, to his father. This father was the saint king Harishchandra. The inscription also lists a line of kings, including Ranadhirasena and Dhimantasena. It notes that King Ranadhirasena extended his kingdom as far as the Himalayas.

Savar played a critical role during the 1971 war. The Savar Cantonment and Jahangirnagar University were early military targets. These attacks followed Operation Searchlight on 25 March. In December 1971, Savar became a final obstacle for the war. Freedom fighters, including Kader Siddiqui, fought to enter the capital. During these final days, a teenager named Golam Dastagir Titu was killed. He died in an encounter between the Pakistani Army and freedom fighters. A memorial monument now honors him near the Central Cattle Breeding & Dairy Farm.

In modern times, Savar is known for its garment industry. Many factories in the city produce clothes for companies in the US and Europe. However, this industry has faced serious safety challenges. In November 2012, a factory fire killed at least 112 people. Some companies, such as Walmart and Sears, refused to pay compensation to the victims. In April 2013, a major building collapse occurred in Savar. This disaster killed 1,129 people and injured about 2,500 others. The building housed a garment factory for international export.

The workforce in these factories often faces difficult conditions. In the 2013 building collapse, 80% of the workers were women. Most of these women were between 18 and 20 years old. They earned between $0.12 and $0.26 per hour. These facts highlight the economic and social realities of the region. The city remains a vital but complex part of the Bangladeshi economy.

Demographic data from the 2022 census shows a specific social structure. There are 113,484 households in the Savar Paurashava. The population includes 7.74% of people under 5 years of age. The sex ratio is 107.20 males for every 100 females. Education is quite high in the city, with a literacy rate of 86.00%. Specifically, the male literacy rate is 87.75% and the female rate is 84.12%. These numbers reflect a growing and educated urban population.
