It sits in the Dhaka District. It is very close to the center of Dhaka. Savar is part of a large group of cities called the Dhaka megacity.

About 384,105 people live in Savar. This makes it the 13th largest city in Bangladesh. Most people in the city can read and write.

Long ago, this place had a different name. Some say it was called Shôrbeshshôr. This name means "Lord of everything." The city sat on the banks of the Bangshi River.

Many people in Savar work in garment factories. These factories make clothes for companies in the US and Europe. Some of these factories have had sad accidents. In 2013, a building housing a factory fell down. This event killed 1,129 people. Many of the workers were young women.

The city is run by a group called the Savar municipality. It is made of 9 wards and 56 mahallas, which are small areas.
