South Tangerang, often abbreviated as Tangsel, is a major city in the Banten province of Indonesia.

It sits on the southwestern border of Jakarta. This location makes it a vital part of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. The city functions as a satellite city for the capital. This means many people live in South Tangerang but work in Jakarta. Because of its location, it has become a hub for business and commerce.

The city's modern layout is driven by large-scale planned towns. These areas are created by private developers to provide organized living spaces. Notable examples include Alam Sutera in North Serpong. BSD City is located within the Serpong and Setu districts. Bintaro Jaya is another major area, spanning Pondok Aren and Ciputat. These developments include massive mixed-use projects like SouthCity. SouthCity is a 57-hectare superblock in Pondok Cabe. It contains residential neighborhoods, commercial spaces, and lifestyle facilities. This area even includes a shopping mall built with an investment of over Rp 1 trillion.

South Tangerang is divided into seven distinct administrative districts, known as kecamatan. These districts are Serpong, Serpong Utara, Pondok Aren, Ciputat, Ciputat Timur, Pamulang, and Setu.

The population density varies greatly across these regions. The western districts, such as Setu and Serpong, are much less crowded. In contrast, the eastern districts like Pamulang and Ciputat are more densely populated. The Ciputat district serves as the center of the city. Each district is further divided into smaller urban villages called kelurahan. There are 54 of these urban villages in total.

The history of South Tangerang involves a shift in local government. It was officially established as an autonomous city on 26 November 2008. Before this date, it was part of the Tangerang Regency. The separation was based on the Banten province constitution. Local leaders wanted to improve government services and construction projects. They also aimed to use the area's natural potential to increase public welfare. An older piece of history is the Situ Gintung reservoir. The Dutch colonial authorities built this reservoir in 1933. It is located in the Cirendeu area of the East Ciputat District. Unfortunately, the 16-metre high dam failed on 27 March 2009. This caused floods that resulted in at least 93 deaths.

Demographics show a rapidly growing and diverse population. According to the 2020 Census, the population was 1,354,350 people. By mid-2024, official estimates reached 1,429,629 inhabitants. This total includes 712,409 males and 717,120 females. The city has a tropical rainforest climate, categorized as Af. This means it experiences heavy rainfall from October to May. Language is also a key part of the local culture. Betawi is the dominant language spoken in almost all areas. However, Sundanese is spoken in the west along the Cisadane River.

Some areas, like the Keranggan Ecotourism and Sundanese Culture Village, preserve this heritage.

Transportation connects the city to the wider region through several methods. Many residents use buses, minibuses, or taxis to commute to Jakarta.

The city is also served by the KRL Commuterline railway. There are five stations on the Tanah Abang–Rangkasbitung Line. These stations include Pondok Ranji and others within the city. For air travel, the city contains the Pondok Cabe Airport.

This airport is owned by PT Pertamina and serves both military and civilian needs. Even cycle rickshaws, known as becak, are still allowed to operate here. This is different from Jakarta, where becaks are forbidden due to traffic congestion.

Future infrastructure plans aim to improve connectivity even further. There are plans to include South Tangerang in the Jakarta MRT network. A proposed line would connect Lebak Bulus to Pamulang. This route would pass through landmarks like Situ Gintung and Pasar Ciputat. Long-term plans also suggest extending the North-South Line to Ancol Marina in North Jakarta. Several toll roads are also being developed or expanded. These include the Serpong-Balaraja Toll Road and the Jakarta Outer Ring Road 2. These projects will help link the city to the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Such connections will support the city's role as a major urban center.
