It is bordered by the province of Banten and the Jakarta capital region to the west. The Java Sea lies to the north, while the Indian Ocean borders the south. To the east, the province meets Central Java. This region serves as the native homeland of the Sundanese people. They represent the second-largest ethnic group within Indonesia.

The history of the region reaches back to prehistoric times. Archaeological findings in Anyer show evidence of bronze and iron metallurgy. This culture dates back to the first millennium AD. Near modern Bekasi, the Buni culture developed unique clay pottery. Many of these items served as burial gifts between 400 BC and AD 100. Other significant sites include the Batujaya Archaeological Site. The Jiwa Temple in Karawang was also built around the 2nd century.

Several powerful kingdoms shaped the early political landscape of West Java. The Tarumanagara kingdom left behind seven stones inscribed with Sanskrit and Wengi letters. These stones describe the kings of that era. After Tarumanagara, the Sunda Kingdom became the primary ruling power. The kingdom reached a peak under King Sri Baduga Maharaja. He ruled from 1482 to 1521 during a period of peace.

International relations changed significantly during the 16th century. To defend against the rising Sultanate of Demak, the Sunda Kingdom signed the Luso-Sundanese Treaty in 1512. This was an agreement with the Portuguese. In exchange, the Portuguese gained rights to build fortresses and warehouses. They also established trading agreements with the kingdom. A Padrao stone monument was placed by the Ciliwung River in 1522 to mark this treaty. However, the alliance could not be fully realized. The port of Sunda Kalapa was conquered by the Sultanates of Demak and Cirebon in 1524.

Following the fall of the Sultanate of Banten, European influence grew. Dutch and British trading companies established ships in western Java during the 16th century. For the next three hundred years, the area fell under the Dutch East Indies administration. West Java was officially re-established as an Indonesian province on 14 July 1950. The province has undergone several administrative changes since then. In 1960, Jakarta was split off as a special capital region. Later, in 2000, Banten was separated to become its own province.

West Java is currently the most populous province in Indonesia. The 2020 Census recorded 48,274,162 residents. By mid-2025, official estimates showed the population grew to 50,759,003. The population increases by roughly 400,000 people every year. This growth is very high in the northwest corner. This area is part of the Jakarta metropolitan area, known as the Bodebek region. This region includes Bekasi, Bogor, and Depok. It covers about 4,770.90 square kilometers.

The province is further divided into 627 districts. These districts contain 663 urban villages and 5,294 rural villages. This complex structure helps manage the massive population living across the diverse landscape.
