The city is located on the northwest coast of Java. Java is the most populous island in the world. Jakarta borders the provinces of West Java and Banten. To the north, it faces the Java Sea. The city sits on a flat alluvial plain. The average elevation is about 8 meters above sea level.

The northern part consists of low-lying coastal plains. Some of these areas are actually below sea level. This makes the north prone to flooding. The southern districts are slightly higher and more hilly. Jakarta also includes the Thousand Islands archipelago in the Jakarta Bay.

Jakarta's history begins with very early human settlements. Archaeological evidence shows the Buni culture lived here between 400 BC and 100 AD. By the 4th century, the area was part of the Tarumanagara kingdom. The Tugu inscription from 417 AD records King Purnawarman's hydraulic projects. These included irrigation and river management near the Chandrabhaga and Gomati rivers. Later, the port of Sunda Kelapa became a major trading hub. It served the Sunda Kingdom. In the 13th century, Chinese records described it as a prosperous port. It exported high-quality pepper to regional maritime networks.

Political shifts changed the name of the settlement many times. In 1527, forces from the Demak Sultanate captured Sunda Kelapa. They renamed the settlement Jayakarta. This name comes from Sanskrit words meaning "complete victory."

The Dutch East India Company later seized the city in 1619. They destroyed Jayakarta and built a fortified colonial city. They named it Batavia after the Batavi, a Germanic tribe. Batavia served as the administrative center of the Dutch East Indies for over 300 years. During the Second World War, Japanese forces occupied the city. They briefly renamed it Jakarta. Following Indonesia's independence in 1945, the name Jakarta became official.

Since becoming the national capital in 1950, Jakarta has undergone massive changes. President Sukarno wanted to make it a modern international city. He launched large projects for the 1962 Asian Games. These included the National Monument and the Senayan sports complex. Major boulevards like Jalan MH Thamrin-Sudirman were also built. Later, the city saw major reforms under Governor Ali Sadikin. He expanded hospitals, schools, and infrastructure. However, large redevelopment projects also displaced many informal settlements. The city grew rapidly due to foreign investment in the late 20th century. This growth was interrupted by the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

The city also attracts many migrants from across the Indonesian archipelago. This constant movement makes it one of the largest urban economies in the region.

Today, Jakarta faces significant urban challenges. The city struggles with heavy traffic congestion and air pollution. It also deals with frequent flooding and land subsidence. These issues are very serious for the growing population. Because of these problems, the Indonesian government has made a major decision. They plan to relocate the national capital. The future capital will be called Nusantara. It will be located in East Kalimantan. Even so, Jakarta will continue to function as a primary economic and political hub for the country.
