Some people use a wider definition for this place. This larger area includes parts of Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, and Guangxi. The plateau acts as a divider between two places. It separates the Sichuan Basin from South China. It is a very important part of the landscape.

The land changes as you move across it. In the southwest, the plateau is flatter. The northeast is much more rugged. You will see rolling hills and deep gorges there. This area also has karst topography. Karst is a type of land with steep rocky peaks. Many mountain ranges surround the plateau. The Hengduan Mountains sit to the northwest. The Wuling Mountains are in the northeast. The Ailao Mountains form a barrier to the southwest.

Water plays a big role in this region. High peaks in Eastern Tibet start many great rivers. These rivers flow south toward the plateau. The Salween and Mekong rivers stay to the south. The Yangtze River turns toward the northeast. In the west, the Nanpan and Beipan Rivers flow into the Pearl River. The Wu River flows into the Yangtze. You can also find large lakes here. Dian Chi and Fuxian Lake are in Yunnan. Erhai Lake sits on the western edge.

People have lived here for a long time. Many minority groups call this plateau home. They have traditionally farmed on hills and in valleys. Today, many people live in rural villages. Some major cities are located here too. These include Kunming, Guiyang, and Zunyi. The terrain is very hard to cross. Engineers have built huge railways and roads to help. The Beipanjiang Bridge is the highest bridge in the world. It sits on the border of Yunnan and Guizhou.

The weather and plants change across the land. The southwest is a drier place. The northeast is much rainier. In east-central Yunnan, the air is semi-arid. Most of Guizhou is humid and subtropical. The plants are also different in each area. Much of Yunnan has subtropical evergreen forests. The Guizhou parts have mixed broadleaf forests. These forests help cover the large highland region.
