The land looks different in different spots. The southwest has flatter highland areas. The northeast has rolling hills and deep gorges. It also has karst topography. This means there are steep rocky peaks. Many big mountains surround the area. The Hengduan Mountains are to the northwest.

Water is very important here. Many great rivers flow toward the plateau. The Salween and Mekong rivers stay to the south. The Yangtze River turns to the northeast. Some rivers, like the Wu River, flow into the Yangtze. Other rivers flow into the Pearl River. You can also find large lakes like Dian Chi.

It is hard to travel through this rugged land. People had to build big railways and roads. The Beipanjiang Bridge is the highest bridge in the world. It sits on the border of Yunnan and Guizhou.
