Hoggar Mountains

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Hoggar Mountains are a vast highland region in the central Sahara. They are located in southern Algeria along the Tropic of Cancer. This massive area covers approximately 550,000 square kilometers. Most of the landscape is a rocky desert. The mountains sit far south of the Algerian capital, Algiers.

This region contains the Ahaggar Cultural Park. This park was formerly known as the Ahaggar National Park between 1987 and 2011. The mountains are a significant geographic feature of the North African landscape.

The geology of the Hoggar Mountains is very ancient and complex. Much of the range is composed of metamorphic rock. This type of rock is approximately 2 billion years old. However, some areas contain much newer rock from volcanic activity. This volcanic activity laid down different layers over the old foundation. Some peaks, such as Ilamen, have very dramatic shapes. These shapes formed through a process called erosion. Erosion wore away extinct volcano domes over time. This left behind the more resistant material that once plugged the volcanic cones.

The climate in the highlands is quite distinct from the surrounding desert. The mountains experience hot summers and a cold winter climate. During winter nights, temperatures can fall below freezing. Rainfall is rare and sporadic throughout the entire year. Despite these conditions, the climate is less extreme than most of the Sahara. This makes the mountains a major location for biodiversity. The area is part of the West Saharan montane xeric woodlands ecoregion.

This specific environment allows many different species to survive here.

Many different plants and animals live within this mountain ecosystem. Vegetation includes scattered trees like myrtle and Tamarix aphylla. You can also find Vachellia tortilis and Vachellia seyal. Other plants include Citrullus colocynthis and Calotropis procera. The park is home to herbivores like the Dorcas gazelle. It also supports the Saharan subspecies of the barbary sheep.

The region is an Important Bird Area (IBA) for BirdLife International. It supports many bird species, such as the Pharaoh eagle-owl and various sandgrouse.

Wildlife in the Hoggar Mountains includes some very rare animals. In the past, populations of the West African crocodile lived here. These populations persisted until the early 20th century. The African wild dog was also once found slightly to the west. However, that species is now thought to be extirpated from the region. Scientists have also focused on the Northwest African cheetah. In 2006, analysis of collected scat showed the cheetah was present. Between 2008 and 2010, camera traps recorded four individuals. In 2020, Algerian naturalists filmed a single cheetah in the Atakor volcanic field.

The history of the Hoggar Mountains is deeply tied to its people and landmarks. The mountains are the land of the Kel Ahaggar Tuareg. Prehistoric settlement is visible through rock paintings dating to 6000 BC. Near the city of Tamanrasset, there is an oasis called Abalessa. This is the location of the tomb of Tin Hinan. She is believed to be the matriarch of the Tuareg.

Another famous site is the Assekrem plateau. In 1911, Charles de Foucauld built a hermitage there. A few Catholic monks still live in that hermitage today.

The mountains also have connections to modern history and hydrology. The highlands are believed to be a main source of the Tamanrasset River. This was an ancient river that flowed during the African humid period. The city of Tamanrasset was built in a wadi, or desert valley. This valley was part of that ancient watercourse. In a different part of modern history, France conducted underground atomic tests in the mountains during the 1960s. This shows how the region has been used for many different purposes over time.
