The Atlas Mountains are a massive mountain range located in the Maghreb region of North Africa.

This range acts as a major geographic barrier. It separates the arid Sahara Desert from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The mountains stretch across three different countries: Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The name of the range is associated with the mythological figure, the Titan Atlas.

The geology of the Atlas Mountains is a complex story of tectonic movement. The process occurred in three distinct geological phases. First, the Anti-Atlas formed during the Paleozoic Era, roughly 300 million years ago. This happened during the Alleghenian orogeny when Africa and North America collided. At that time, these mountains were a chain that rivaled the modern Himalayas.

The second phase occurred during the Mesozoic Era. During this time, the Earth's crust underwent widespread extension. This rifting separated the continents and created thick intracontinental sedimentary basins. Most of the rocks on the surface of the High Atlas were deposited under the ocean during this period. Finally, the mountains were uplifted during the Paleogene and Neogene Periods. This happened as the land masses of Europe and Africa collided near the Iberian Peninsula. This convergence also helped form the Alps and the Pyrenees.

Geologists divide the Atlas into four primary subranges. The Anti-Atlas extends from the Atlantic Ocean in southwest Morocco toward the northeast. It includes the Djebel Siroua, a volcanic massif with a summit of 3,304 meters. The High Atlas is located in central Morocco. It contains Toubkal, which is the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 meters.

The Middle Atlas is the northernmost Moroccan range. It serves as an important water catchment because it receives more rain than the southern ranges.

The third area is the Saharan Atlas in Algeria, which marks the northern edge of the Sahara. Finally, the Tell Atlas is a long chain that parallels the Mediterranean coast.

The mountains are home to diverse biological life. Many species are found in Africa, while some are also found in Europe. The Middle Atlas holds the majority of the world's population of Barbary macaques.

However, many species face danger. Some are currently endangered, and others are already extinct. The Atlas bear and the North African elephant are examples of extinct species. The Barbary lion is also extinct in the wild.

Human populations are deeply connected to this landscape. The mountains are primarily inhabited by Berber populations, also known as Imazighen. In the High Atlas, Berber people live in small villages and farm the high plains of the Ourika Valley.

People also utilize the mountains for energy and food. For example, a hydroelectric dam at Barrage Cavagnac created the artificial lake Lalla Takerkoust.

Beyond biology and culture, the Atlas Mountains are rich in natural resources. The region contains significant deposits of various minerals and materials. These include iron ore, lead ore, copper, and silver. There are also deposits of mercury, rock salt, and phosphate. Other valuable resources found here include marble, anthracite coal, and natural gas.
