The Cévennes is a beautiful region of mountains in south-central France.

It sits on the south-east edge of the Massif Central. This area covers parts of several places called départements, including Lozère and Gard. Many important rivers start their journey in these mountains. Some rivers, like the Loire, flow toward the Atlantic Ocean. Other rivers, like the Gardons, flow toward the Mediterranean Sea. This makes the Cévennes a very important watershed for the land.

The mountains were shaped by many things over a long time. Deep rocks like granite and schist were pushed up high. Later, the sea rose and covered the area with thick limestone. As the sea levels changed, the water carved deep paths into the stone. These paths became famous canyons, such as the Gorges du Tarn.

The highest point in the whole range is Mont Lozère, which reaches 1,699 meters. Another famous peak is Mont Aigoual, which stands at 1,567 meters.

People have lived in the Cévennes for a very long time. Evidence shows humans were there as far back as 400,000 BCE. During the Neolithic period, people built huge stone structures called megaliths. Some of these include stone circles and menhirs. The stone rows of La Roque-Gageac are the second largest site of this kind in Europe. They were built between 3,000 and 2,500 BCE. The name Cévennes likely comes from the Gaulish word Cebenna, meaning ridgeline.

The history of the region is full of many different groups. The Romans conquered the area in 121 BCE. Later, in the Middle Ages, monks helped people farm the land. In the 1600s, a group called the Huguenots faced hard times. They were French Protestants who were not allowed to worship freely. Some fought back in a struggle known as the Camisards War. These people used the hilly terrain to stay safe and keep their faith.

Today, the Cévennes is a special place for nature and culture. Much of the land is protected in the Cévennes National Park. This park was created in 1970 to keep the area safe. In 1999, about 165,707 people lived in the wider region. Many people there are known as Cévenols. The area is also famous for a weather event called épisodes cévenols. This happens when cold Atlantic air meets warm Mediterranean air, causing heavy rain.
