It was first created in 1956 to keep this land safe. The area is a plateau made of very old limestone. This rock is 150 million years old. This place matters because it protects many living things. The rough land and thick plants help keep people away. This helps the animals live without much trouble.

Rain and earth movements change the shape of the land. This is called karst topography. Rainwater wears away the limestone over a long time. This creates deep canyons and underground rivers. In the center, rainfall makes ribbons of flowstone. Some rocks become sharp ridges called tsingy. This Malagasy word means "where one cannot walk barefoot." On the west side, a huge cliff is called the Wall of Ankarana.

People have explored these caves for a long time. Jean Duflos began exploring the area in the 1960s. He often worked with other cave experts called speleologists. He mapped many of the underground passages. The massif has the longest cave systems in Madagascar. It may even have the longest caves in all of Africa. One cave, La Grotte d'Andrafiabe, has many long paths.

Scientists found many amazing things during expeditions in the 1980s. They found bones of large lemurs that are now extinct. They also found new types of blind fish and shrimp. In 1986, Phil Chapman and Jean-Elie Randriamasy studied the birds. They found 65 different bird species there. This is nearly one third of all breeding birds in Madagascar. Many species of lemurs live here today. These include the crowned lemur and the aye-aye.

Some animals in Ankarana work together in groups. Many small songbirds hunt for insects in mixed bands. These birds include the sunbird and the bulbul. Some birds look on tree trunks. Others search under green leaves. Working together helps them find more food. It also helps them stay safe from predators. This is a smart way to live in the wild.
