To the northeast, you can find the hills of Mont Duplan. To the southwest, there are the hills of Montaury. The city is a very warm place to visit. In July and August, temperatures often rise above 34 °C. Winters are cool, and the city sees snow every single year.

The city has a very long and interesting story. Long ago, people lived there during the Neolithic period. They were semi-nomadic cultivators who worked the land. Around 2500 BCE, a large limestone stone called a menhir was placed in a field. This is the oldest monument in Nîmes. Later, a Celtic people called the Volcae Arecomici lived there. They named the town after a local water god named Nemausus. The city grew even more when the Romans arrived.

Nîmes became a Roman colony sometime before 28 BCE. It sat on an important road called the Via Domitia. This path connected Italy to Hispania. The Romans built many grand things to make the city great. They built a long ring of walls with 14 towers. They also built a large forum where the city met. Soldiers from Julius Caesar's legions were given land here to farm. This helped the city grow into a busy Roman center.

You can still see many of these ancient buildings today. The Arena of Nîmes is a famous elliptical amphitheatre. It was built in the 1st or 2nd century AD. It is one of the best-preserved arenas in all of France.
