Today, most of this territory is part of the larger Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes administrative region. Historically, the area matches the land of the old Province of Auvergne. That province was dissolved in 1790. Later, a separate administrative region named Auvergne existed from 1956 until 2015. This region is famous for its unique landscape. It features high mountain ranges and many dormant volcanoes. These geological features make the area a significant part of the French landscape.

The volcanic activity in Auvergne is a central part of its geography. A chain of volcanoes called the chaâne des Puys defines much of the terrain. These volcanoes began to form approximately 70,000 years ago. Over long periods, most of them have eroded. This erosion has left behind plugs of hardened magma. These plugs create rounded hilltops known as puys. The Puy de Dôme is the highest volcano in the region. However, the Sancy Massif in the Monts Dore is the highest point in all of Auvergne. Together, the Monts Dore and the Chaâne des Puys contain 80 volcanoes. The last confirmed eruption happened around 4040 BCE.

Auvergne's landscape varies greatly from north to south. The northern part consists mostly of hills. The southern portion is much more mountainous. This southern area is dotted with green pastures.

Large forests also define the region. The Forest of Tronçais covers nearly 20,000 hectares. It is the largest oak forest in Europe. Water is also a major feature of the terrain. Two large rivers, the Loire and the Allier, flow through the region. The Loire runs through the southeast and borders the northeast. The Allier runs from north to south through the center. There are also about 50 freshwater ponds and lakes. Some of these lakes have volcanic origins. Lac de Guéry is the highest lake in the region.

Long before modern France, the region was home to the Arverni. They were one of the most powerful Gallic tribes. They were joined by other groups like the Gabali, the Vellavi, and the Cadurci. Vercingetorix became their king in 52 BC. He was a clever leader who created alliances with surrounding Celtic tribes. He secured these alliances by holding the children of other kings as hostages.

The Arverni were very wealthy. They used their mountainous location for defense. They also had many mines for gold and silver. These mines were used at least since 400 BC. The Arverni were also skilled artisans. They were experts in metalworking and copperwork. They even minted their own money for trade.

History in Auvergne changed many times through different eras. In the 5th century, Sidonius Apollinaris marked the end of the Roman age. During the Middle Ages, the land was divided into many parts. It was ruled by various counts and dukes. For example, the Dukes of Bourbon controlled parts of the area. Eventually, King Francis I confiscated these territories in 1527. In the 16th century, the region faced religious wars. Later, Queen Catherine de' Medici helped bring the final feudal lands under royal control. In the 18th century, farming improved due to new policies. Farmers began to specialize in cheese, glasswork, and ironwork.

Today, Auvergne has a unique economy based on farming and industry.

The region is a major producer of beef and dairy cattle. This supports the production of famous cheeses like Cantal, Bleu d'Auvergne, and Saint-Nectaire. Industry is also very important here. About 22% of the working population works in industry. This is higher than the national average of 18%. The tire industry is a major employer. The famous company Michelin is based in Clermont-Ferrand. Another company, Dunlop, is based in Montluçon. The region is also a center for scientific research. There are more than 8,000 researchers working in fields like chemistry and meteorology.

Auvergne is also a place of culture and tourism. The Le Pal theme park is a popular destination. It had 640,000 visitors in 2018. It is the most visited theme park in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The region's history is also captured in art and film. The documentary "The Sorrow and the Pity" discusses the region during World War II. During that war, the city of Vichy was the headquarters for the French State. Even today, the region remains a quiet, sparsely populated area. It sits in the middle of the "empty diagonal" in France. This makes it a peaceful place to explore its natural and historical wonders.
