It sat along the coast. The region had four parts called departments. These were Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres, and Vienne. The city of Poitiers was the capital.

Other big cities included La Rochelle and Niort.

Farming is very important there. People grow corn and wheat. They also raise cattle. Some businesses make dairy products and machines. In 2016, this region joined with others. It is now part of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

A long time ago, many people moved from here. They traveled to North America in the 1600s and 1700s. These people became the Acadian and Cajun groups. They settled in places like Canada and Louisiana. They were farmers and fishers.

Many groups lived here in the past. A tribe called the Pictavi lived there first. Later, the Romans took control of the land. Many other groups, like the Franks, ruled the area too. Even today, some people speak local languages like Poitevin or Occitan.
