In 1604, French settlers arrived. They built a town called Port-Royal. This became the first capital. Later, people from France and England fought for the land. These fights happened during many colonial wars.

The Wabanaki Confederacy was a group of native people. They were allies with the French. Many battles took place in places like Maine and Nova Scotia. In 1710, the British took control of Port-Royal. The land was later divided into different parts. Some areas stayed French for a while. Today, we call the people from this history Acadians. They have their own special culture. You can find them in Canada and in Louisiana. In Louisiana, they are often called Cajuns. The name Acadia might come from a Greek word. It could also come from a native word for fertile land.
