The Kingdom of Navarre was a special land in history. It sat on both sides of the western Pyrenees mountains. This area is located between what we now call Spain and France.

Long ago, the land reached all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. The kingdom was also known as the Kingdom of Pamplona. It was a place where different cultures met and lived.

This kingdom mattered because it sat in a very important middle ground.

The land was once home to tribes called the Vascones. These people spoke an early form of the Basque language.

The Romans arrived in this area around 74 BC. Unlike other tribes, the Vascones worked out a special status with the Roman Empire. This helped them stay in their lands while the Romans built cities and roads. The Romans even helped build the city of Pompaelo, which is modern-day Pamplona. Over time, the people began to use forms of Latin that became a new language. However, many people continued to speak Basque in the mountains.

For a long time, the region was a place of conflict. It sat between the Carolingian Empire to the north and the Ummayad Emirate of Córdoba to the south.

In 778, a Frankish army led by Charlemagne tried to move through the area. During their retreat, they were attacked by Basque tribes at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. This battle was a very famous event in history. Later, the Muslim leaders from Córdoba took control of much of the land. The local people had to pay taxes to the emirate to keep their own way of life.

In the year 824, a man named Íñigo Arista became a leader. Tradition says he was elected to rule the area around Pamplona.

This was the beginning of the Kingdom of Pamplona. The kingdom changed many times over the next few centuries. For example, the kings of Aragon ruled from 1054 to 1134. Later, the kings of France ruled from 1285 to 1328. In 1512, Ferdinand II of Aragon conquered the southern part of the kingdom. The northern part eventually joined with France in 1589.

Today, we can see where the old kingdom used to be. It covered parts of modern Spain and France.

The land included the Spanish areas of Navarre, Basque Country, and La Rioja. It also included a French area called Lower Navarre. You can still see the influence of this history in the languages and places of the Pyrenees. The story of Navarre shows how small lands can be shaped by huge empires.
