The Kingdom of Asturias was a medieval land in the Iberian Peninsula. It began in the mountains of northern Spain. This kingdom was the first Christian political group in the area after the Umayyad conquest.

The land was very mountainous and rugged. Many different groups of people lived there long ago. Some were of Celtic origin, like the Astures and the Cantabri. These groups lived in valleys and near the coast. Over time, they began to form a single Asturian identity.

The kingdom started with a nobleman named Pelagius. Around the year 722, he led his people in a fight. This fight happened at a place called Covadonga.

Pelagius and his followers hid in a deep valley. They used the mountains to protect themselves from the Umayyad army. The battle was a victory for Pelagius. This event is seen as the start of the Christian kingdom. It gave the people hope to keep their own way of life.

Later kings worked hard to make the land strong. King Alfonso II was a very important leader. He was recognized as a king by Charlemagne and the Pope.

During his rule, people found the holy bones of St James the Great. These bones were found in a place called Compostela in Galicia. This discovery changed everything for the kingdom. Pilgrims began to travel from all over Europe to visit. These travelers created paths between Asturias and other distant lands.

Other kings had to face many different hard jobs. King Ramiro I had to stop Viking attacks in 844. He gathered an army in Galicia and burned the Viking ships.

Later, King Alfonso III helped the kingdom grow much larger. He led his armies deep into new territories. He even crossed the Tagus and Guadiana rivers. He fought many battles to expand his borders. Alfonso III also spent time building beautiful churches and palaces. One famous building from this era is Santa Maria del Naranco.

The kingdom did not stay the same forever. As time passed, the borders moved further south. The kingdom grew to reach places like the Douro valley. Eventually, the focus of the land began to shift. In the year 924, a big change happened. King Fruela II moved his court to a new place. This marked the moment the Kingdom of Asturias became the Kingdom of León. This change showed how much the region had grown and changed over the centuries.
