Long ago, the land sat near the Pyrenees mountains. It was between two big groups. One group was the Carolingian Empire. The other was the Ummayad Emirate of Córdoba.

The people there were the Vascones. They spoke an early version of the Basque language.

In the year 824, a man named Íñigo Arista became the leader. People say he was elected to rule. This was the start of the Kingdom of Pamplona.

For many years, the kingdom changed. Sometimes the kings of Aragon ruled the land. Other times, the kings of France ruled it too.

In the 15th century, there was a fight over who would lead. Ferdinand II of Aragon took the southern part in 1512. Later, the northern part joined with France. In 1589, King Henry III of Navarre also became the King of France. He was known as Henry IV. The kings used the title "King of France and Navarre."
