It sat on the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. Today, this area is a part of Spain. Aragon was not just a small place. It was part of a larger group called the Crown of Aragon. This group included many lands like Valencia and Catalonia. It even included places in Italy and Greece. The King of Aragon ruled all these different lands. However, he ruled each one in its own way.

Aragon began as a small area near a river.

The name might mean "good upper valley." In the year 1035, a large land called Navarre was split up. A man named Ramiro received the part called Aragon. He was the first leader of this new land. His son was Sancho Ramírez. Sancho was the first to use the title "King of the Aragonese and Pamplonese." As the kingdom grew, the capital moved. It moved from Jaca to Huesca in 1096. Later, it moved to Zaragoza in 1118.

A big change happened in the year 1150.

Queen Petronilla of Aragon married Ramon Berenguer IV. He was the Count of Barcelona. Their son was named Alfonso II. He inherited all the lands from both parents. This marriage created the Crown of Aragon. The king held many different titles. He was a Count and a Duke too. These titles changed as he won or lost new lands. His power was very large across the sea.

Eventually, Aragon joined with the Kingdom of Castile.

This happened through a royal marriage. A prince named Ferdinand married Isabella. This joined the two crowns together. When King John II died in 1479, the union became official. This union helped form the start of modern Spain. For a long time, Aragon kept its own rules. They had their own groups called the Corts. These groups helped manage the land and its laws.

Things changed again during a war later on.

Between 1707 and 1715, Philip V made new laws. These were called the Nueva Planta decrees. These laws gave more power to the central government in Spain. The old independent kingdoms were merged into one. Even so, some rights were given back in 1711. Aragon stayed as an administrative unit for a long time. In 1982, it became an autonomous community of Spain. It is still a very important part of the country today.
