Most of this land is part of the country of France. However, the region also includes some islands in the sea. These are called the Channel Islands, and they include Guernsey and Jersey.

Many people call the people living here Normans.

Long ago, many different groups of people lived on this land. First, humans made art inside caves. Later, Celtic tribes lived there and were part of a group called Armorica. Then, the Romans arrived and changed how things worked. They built many new roads and towns for people to use. They even built a large theatre for shows.

They also made beautiful floor art called mosaics.

Romans grew crops like wheat and flax in the fields. They even used special systems to heat their rooms.

In the 9th century, a new group of people arrived by sea. These were the Vikings, who were also called Northmen. They sailed up the Seine river in their ships. They often raided towns and monasteries along the water. This was a very difficult time for the people living there. Eventually, a Viking leader named Rollo made a big deal. In 911, he signed the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte with King Charles the Simple.

This treaty gave Rollo the land he had won. This is how the name Normandy began.

Normandy has many interesting facts and numbers to remember. In 2017, about 3,499,280 people lived in the region. There are several large cities that people visit often. These include Rouen, Caen, Le Havre, and Cherbourg. For a long time, Normandy and England were linked together. This happened because the same person was the Duke of Normandy and the King of England. This lasted for almost 150 years after the year 1066.
