Rollo's life was full of big changes and important choices. He first appeared in history as a leader during the siege of Paris in 885. Later, he led a group in a failed fight at Chartres in 911. These events led to a very famous agreement. This was the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte. In this deal, King Charles the Simple gave Rollo land. The land was between the Epte River and the sea. Rollo had to make several big promises to the king.

To keep the land, Rollo had to change how he lived. He agreed to stop being a raider. He also promised to protect the Seine area from other Vikings. Rollo decided to join the Christian faith. When he was baptized, he took the name Robert. He named himself after his godfather, Robert I. Some stories say he even refused to kiss the king's foot. He wanted to show he was still a proud leader.
