It sits inland from the northwestern coast of the country. The Orne river flows right through the heart of the city. A canal was built to link the city to the sea at Ouistreham. This canal has a lock to keep the ocean tides out. This allows large ships to reach the freshwater harbours.

The weather here is often wet and the summers stay cool.

The city has many layers of history to discover. Some people think the name Caen comes from a Gaulish word for a battlefield. In the 10th century, the Dukes of Normandy began to grow the settlement. Around the year 1060, William the Conqueror started building a huge castle. This castle is one of the largest fortresses in Western Europe. It was a very important place for the leaders of Normandy.

Today, the castle holds museums for art and local history.

William the Conqueror left many things behind in Caen. He built the castle and also ordered two famous abbeys to be built. One is the Abbey of St. Stephen, also called the Men's Abbey. The other is the Abbey of the Holy Trinity, or the Women's Abbey. William himself is buried in the city at St. Stephen's Abbey. These old buildings show how important the city was long ago. They are still standing as part of the city today.

Caen saw very difficult times during the Second World War. In 1944, there was heavy fighting during the Battle of Normandy. Many parts of the city were destroyed by bombing and battles. It took many years of hard work to rebuild everything. Reconstruction of the city and the university lasted until 1962. Now, the Mémorial de Caen serves as a museum for peace. It helps people remember the events of that time.
