Mont-Saint-Michel is a famous tidal island located in Normandy, France.

It sits near the mouth of the Couesnon River, just one kilometre off the north-western coast. The island is a rocky place made of a hard stone called leucogranite. This stone formed from underground magma a very long time ago.

Today, the mount is a very special place for visitors. It is the most visited tourist attraction in France outside of Paris. More than three million people travel there every single year.

The way the water moves here is quite amazing. The tides change a lot in the bay. The water level can move between very high and very low marks. In the past, people had to walk across the sand to reach the island. This was very dangerous because the tide could come in quickly.

To help, a new light bridge was opened in July 2014. This bridge cost 85 million euros and was opened by President François Hollande. It allows the water to flow freely around the island again. This helps stop silt from building up around the rocks.

History tells us that the island was once called Mont Tombe. Legend says an angel named Michael appeared to a bishop in the year 708. The bishop was told to build a church on the rock. Over many centuries, the island became a very important place for pilgrims. It also served as a strong place to defend against attacks. During the Hundred Years' War, the English tried to take it twice. In 1433, a small group of defenders fended off a full English attack.

The buildings on the mount have changed many times. In the 11th century, an architect named William of Volpiano designed a Romanesque church. He had to build many underground rooms to hold up the weight. Later, after a fire in 1204, the abbey was rebuilt in a Gothic style. The abbey was even used as a prison for a long time. It was closed as a prison in 1863 after many people asked to save it.

Today, the mount is a protected site for the whole world. In 1979, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. This is because of its beautiful looks and its deep history. You can see many old buildings that are protected as monuments.

Some people even visit to see the sheep that graze on the salt marshes nearby. These sheep are used to make a local food that visitors love. The mount remains a place of wonder for everyone who sees it.
