Long ago, the city grew because of powerful kings. King Louis XIII first built a small hunting lodge there. He bought the land and a forest for his private hunting.

Later, his son King Louis XIV wanted something much bigger. He wanted to move the government away from Paris. In 1682, he moved the royal court to Versailles permanently. This made the city the unofficial capital of France for many years. The king even gave away free land to help build a new city around his palace.

The city was built with a very neat and organized plan. King Louis XIV wanted the streets to be symmetrical. This means they look balanced on both sides. The streets were laid out in a grid pattern.

The king even made rules about how tall houses could be. He did not want buildings to block the view from his palace windows. This smart design was so good it helped inspire the building of Washington, D.C. in America.

Versailles has been the site of many important world events. It is where leaders signed famous treaties to end wars. One treaty ended the American Revolution in 1783. Another treaty was signed after World War I. The city also saw the start of the French Revolution in 1789. Today, the French Parliament even meets at the Château de Versailles to vote on laws. This makes the city a very important place for history.

Today, the city is a busy place with 84,095 people.
