Île-de-France is a large and busy region in north-central France.

It contains the capital city of Paris and is often called the Paris Region. The region is very crowded with many people living close together. On January 1, 2023, about 12,271,794 people lived there. This was nearly one-fifth of the total population of France.

The area is divided into eight different departments. These include Paris, Essonne, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Seine-et-Marne, Val-de-Marne, Val-d'Oise, and Yvelines.

Geography in the region is shaped by many flowing rivers. The River Seine runs through the middle of the land. Other rivers like the Marne, Oise, and Epte also cross the area. These rivers often curve and wind because the land is mostly flat.

Most of the region is actually green and rural. About 78.9 percent of the land is made of forests, farms, or natural spaces. Only about 28 percent of the land is used for buildings and cities. This balance helps create many lakes and ponds for people to enjoy.

History in this area goes back a very long time. A group called the Parisii lived here around the middle of the 3rd-century BC. They were a tribe that traded goods along the rivers. Later, the Romans conquered the area in 52 BC. They built many things like temples, baths, and theaters. In the year 508, Clovis the Frank made Paris his capital city. Later, kings built famous places like the Palace of Versailles and the Palace of Fontainebleau.

The region is a very important place for money and business. In 2019, it produced nearly one-third of all the wealth in France.

Many huge companies keep their main offices here, such as banks and energy firms. The La Défense area has many tall skyscrapers for business. The region also has the Charles de Gaulle Airport. In 2024, this airport handled over 70 million passengers. It is the busiest airport in the European Union.

While the region is very rich, life can be hard for some. There is a big difference between how much money different people have. In 2015, the official poverty rate was 15.9 percent. High housing prices also make it difficult for some people to live near Paris. This has pushed many people to live in the outer parts of the region. These outer areas are known as the grande couronne. People who live here are sometimes called Franciliens.
