The name means "Island of France." However, the region is not actually an island. The name might come from the rivers that flow through it. The Seine river runs through the middle. Other rivers like the Marne and Oise also cross the land. These rivers wind and curve through the area.

Many people visit this region for its history. You can find the famous Palace of Versailles there. There is also Disneyland Paris.

The region is very rich. It makes about one-third of the money for all of France. Many large companies have their main offices here. But life is not easy for everyone. Some people in the region live in poverty. Housing prices are also very high near Paris.
