The city is surrounded by several wooded hills and forests. These include the Marly and Fausses-Reposes forests to the north. To the south lie the Satory and Meudon forests. Versailles is a wealthy suburb of Paris with a service-based economy. It is also a major destination for tourists worldwide. The city is famous for the Château de Versailles and its magnificent gardens. These sites are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city's layout is the result of a very organized urban plan. King Louis XIV ordered the creation of a new town around his palace. He used an ingenious decree to help the city grow. He authorized people to acquire land lots for free. There were only two conditions for this land. First, owners had to pay a small annual tax of 5 sols per arpent. Second, they had to build houses according to specific royal models. These models were set by the Surintendant des Bâtiments du Roi.

This architect in chief of the royal demesne ensured a consistent style. The city was built with a rational and symmetrical grid of streets. This design was centered around the Avenue de Paris. The king even limited building heights. No roof could exceed the level of the Marble Courtyard. This ensured that the view from the palace windows remained unobstructed.

Versailles has served as a powerful seat of government throughout history. It functioned as the de facto capital of the Kingdom of France for over a century. This period lasted from 1682 until 1789.

The transition began in May 1682 when Louis XIV moved the court permanently. Before this, the area was a small village. Louis XIII had originally built a small hunting lodge there. He acquired the land and forest for private hunting in the early 1600s.

By the time of Louis XIV's death in 1715, the village had grown into a city of 30,000 inhabitants. The city later became the cradle of the French Revolution in 1789. It served as the capital again briefly in 1871 during the Paris Commune insurrection. Today, the Congress of France meets at the Château de Versailles to vote on constitutional revisions.

The city has also been a vital location for international diplomacy. Many famous treaties were signed within its walls. The Treaty of Paris was signed here in 1783 to end the American Revolution. Later, the Treaty of Versailles was signed following World War I. These events show how the city has influenced global history. Beyond politics, the city serves several administrative roles today. It is the préfecture, or regional capital, of the Yvelines department. It is also the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese. This diocese is subordinate to the archdiocese of Paris. Additionally, Versailles is the seat of a Court of Appeal. This court handles legal matters for the western suburbs of Paris.

Modern Versailles is a large and active urban center. As of 2023, the population is 84,095 people. This is a decrease from its peak population of 94,145 in 1975. The city is a major node for the French army. This tradition includes the military camp of Satory. It also hosts the largest académie in France. An académie is a district of the Ministry of National Education. This specific district supervises all elementary and high schools in the western Paris suburbs. The city's area is about one-quarter the size of the city of Paris. In 1989, its population density was 5,212 inhabitants per square kilometer. This is much lower than the density found in Paris.

The climate in Versailles is classified as oceanic. This means it has specific patterns of temperature and rain. Summer days are usually warm and pleasant. Average temperatures range between 18°C and 25°C. These days often feature a fair amount of sunshine. Winter conditions are different. Sunshine is often scarce during the colder months. Days are cool, and nights are cold. Low temperatures usually stay around 3°C. While light night frosts are common, temperatures seldom drop below -2°C. Snow falls every year, though it rarely stays on the ground for long. The city occasionally experiences light snow or flurries.

Versailles remains a symbol of architectural and urban planning excellence. The symmetrical grid was so effective it served as a model for other cities. Specifically, Pierre Charles L'Enfant used Versailles as a model for Washington, D.C. This connects the history of France directly to the design of the United States capital. The Hôtel de Ville, or town hall, has been the meeting place for the town council since 1900.
