The city's identity is shaped by its unique administrative structure. Paris is divided into twenty distinct districts called arrondissements. Each arrondissement possesses its own specific cultural identity. The modern look of the city comes from Haussmann's renovation. This massive project created wide boulevards, new parks, and public works. Because of this, Paris became known as the "capital of the 19th century." This renovation changed how people move through the urban landscape. It transformed the city into a modern metropolis.

Transportation in Paris is both massive and highly efficient. The city serves as a major hub for railways, motorways, and air travel. In 2024, Charles de Gaulle Airport was the busiest airport in the EU. The city is also famous for its Métro system. This underground railway features beautiful Art Nouveau decorations. Paris is a global leader in sustainable travel. It is one of only two cities to win the Sustainable Transport Award twice. This reflects a commitment to eco-friendly movement within a crowded space.

The history of Paris began with the Parisii tribe. They inhabited the area around the middle of the 3rd century BC. They used the Île de la Cité as a trading center. They even minted their own coins for trade. In 52 BC, Julius Caesar conquered the Paris Basin. The Romans established a settlement on the Left Bank. They called this town Lutetia.

Lutetia became a prosperous city with baths, temples, and an amphitheatre. Over time, the name evolved from Lutetia to Paris.

Many powerful leaders influenced the growth of the city. Clovis the Frank made Paris his capital in 508. Later, King Philip Augustus built the first city walls. He also rebuilt the bridges and paved the streets. During the 17th century, Cardinal Richelieu worked to make Paris beautiful. He built five new bridges and several palaces. However, the French Revolution in 1789 brought sudden, violent change. A mob stormed the Bastille to challenge royal authority. Following this, Napoleon Bonaparte rose to power. He built monuments like the Arc de Triomphe to honor military glory.

Today, Paris is a vital center for international politics. The president of France and the French Parliament are located here. The city hosts many United Nations organisations. This includes UNESCO, which focuses on culture and education. Other groups like the OECD and the European Space Agency are also based here.

The city is a major destination for art lovers. The Musée d'Orsay and Musée de l'Orangerie hold famous Impressionist art. Other museums like the Musée Picasso focus on modern works. Parts of the city along the Seine are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Paris also plays a huge role in global sports and fashion. It hosts major events like the French Open tennis tournament. The city is home to famous clubs like Paris Saint-Germain. Paris has also had the honor of hosting the Summer Olympics three times. These events bring millions of people to the city's streets. From its ancient roots as Lutetia to its modern role in the EU, Paris remains a central pillar of world history. It connects the past to the future through its architecture and its people.
