Étretat is a beautiful town in Normandy, France. It sits on the coast in the Seine-Maritime department. The town is near a place called Le Havre. It is a popular spot for tourists and farmers. Visitors often come to see the famous white cliffs. These cliffs are made of a material called chalk.

The cliffs belong to a group known as the Etretat Chalk Complex. This area has very interesting layers of rock. Some of these cliffs rise very high above the sea. They create a stunning view for anyone visiting the coast.

Nature has carved amazing shapes into these white cliffs. There are three natural arches made of stone. Two of these arches can be seen from the town. They are named Porte d'Aval and Porte d'Amont.

The third arch is called Manneporte. It is the largest arch of them all. However, you cannot see it from the town itself. There is also a pointed rock called L'Aiguille. People often call it the Needle because of its shape. It rises up high above the waves.

Many famous people have been drawn to this place. Great artists like Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet came to paint here. They loved the light and the shapes of the cliffs.

Writers have also used Étretat in their stories. Maurice Leblanc wrote about these cliffs in his novel, The Hollow Needle. This book is about a character named Arsène Lupin. You can even visit the Clos Lupin Museum today. This museum is located in the home where Leblanc lived. It is a special place for fans of his work.

History is also part of the town's story. In 1927, a biplane called The White Bird took off from here. Two heroes, Charles Nungesser and François Coli, were on board. They wanted to fly from Paris to New York City without stopping. Sadly, the plane disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean. This remains a great mystery in the history of flying.

A monument was built to remember them. The first one was destroyed during World War II. A new, taller monument was built in 1963. A museum sits nearby to tell this story.

The town's economy relies mostly on tourism today. Many people visit the shops and markets.

In the past, people did different work on the beaches. During the 1700s and 1800s, they burned kelp. Kelp is a type of sea plant found on the shore. They used it to make things like iodine and soda. This work helped the town for a long time. Now, the town is a top place for travelers in Normandy. It is a place where nature and history meet.
