Étretat is a commune located in the Seine-Maritime department of the Normandy region. It sits in northwestern France along the coast of the Pays de Caux area. Today, Étretat serves as both a farming town and a major center for tourism.

The town is most famous for its spectacular chalk cliffs. These cliffs belong to the Etretat Chalk Complex. This geological feature consists of a complex stratigraphy of Turonian and Coniacian chalks. The cliffs rise high above the sea and create a dramatic landscape. Within these cliffs, nature has formed several unique structures. There are three natural arches and a pointed rock formation called L'Aiguille. L'Aiguille is often called the Needle because of its shape.

The natural arches in Étretat vary in size and visibility. Two of the three famous arches are visible directly from the town. These are named the Porte d'Aval and the Porte d'Amont. The third arch is called the Manneporte. It is the largest of the three arches. However, the Manneporte cannot be seen from the town itself. These formations are key parts of the local geography. They draw many visitors to the coast to witness their scale.

Art and literature have been deeply influenced by this landscape. Famous artists like Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet, and Eugène Boudin were attracted to the cliffs. They often painted the natural arches and the sea. The writer Maurice Leblanc also found inspiration here. He lived in the commune and wrote much of his work at home. His famous character, the master thief Arsène Lupin, appears in his novel The Hollow Needle. This 1909 book features the cliffs prominently. You can now visit the Clos Lupin Museum at his former home.

History in Étretat is also marked by a great aviation mystery. In May 1927, a biplane called The White Bird (L'Oiseau Blanc) departed from this area. Two French heroes, Charles Nungesser and François Coli, were the pilots. They attempted the first non-stop flight from Paris to New York City. After their departure on May 8, 1927, the plane disappeared over the Atlantic Ocean. This event remains one of the great unexplained mysteries of aviation. A monument was built in Étretat to honor this flight. The original monument was destroyed during the German occupation in World War II. A new, taller monument and a museum were constructed in 1963.

The economy of Étretat has changed significantly over the centuries. Currently, the economy rests mainly on tourism. The town is a top tourist attraction in Normandy. It is one of the most visited sites in the region. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the economy was different. People practiced kelp-burning on the local beaches. They harvested kelp to produce soda, potash, and iodine. This industry reached full vigor until the late 1870s. During that time, iodine-rich mineral deposits were discovered in Chile. This discovery dealt a severe blow to the local kelp industry. However, small amounts of kelp were still harvested in northern France for other uses.

Many notable figures have lived in or visited Étretat. The philosopher and historian Élie Halévy was born here in 1870. The writer Guy de Maupassant spent much of his childhood in the town. He even wrote a story called "The Englishman of Étretat" based on local encounters. The operatic baritone Jean-Baptiste Faure owned a villa in the area. He was a friend of the artist Édouard Manet and enjoyed painting the cliffs. The composer Jacques Offenbach also had a villa named "Villa d'Orphée." These connections show how the town has long been a place for creative people.
