He has been involved in the creation of more than 50 films. His work spans many different roles, including writer, director, and producer. Besson is often associated with the Cinéma du look movement. This was a specific, highly visual style of filmmaking. It emerged in France during the 1980s and lasted into the early 1990s. His films often focus on striking images and spectacle. He aims to make movies that are both convincing and pleasurable to watch.

Besson's path to cinema was shaped by significant life changes. Born in Paris, his parents were Club Med scuba-diving instructors. He spent much of his youth traveling to resorts in Italy, Yugoslavia, and Greece. He originally planned to become a marine biologist. However, a diving accident at age 17 left him unable to dive. To decide his future, he made a list of his skills. He realized he had a deep love for writing and images. He decided to visit a film set to learn the industry. Soon after, he left school to pursue filmmaking professionally.

His early career involved many different types of projects. He worked as an assistant to directors like Claude Faraldo and Patrick Grandperret. He also directed short films, documentaries, and commercials. In 1980, he founded his own production company. He first named it Les Films du Loup, then changed it to Les Films du Dauphin. He later co-founded EuropaCorp in 2000 with Pierre-Ange Le Pogam. This new company was intended to compete with major American studios. Besson wanted to maintain a stable of French technicians and directors. He even sought partnerships in Japan and China to grow his reach.

Besson became a pivotal figure in the Cinéma du look movement. Critics like Raphaël Bassan and Guy Austin identified him as a leader of this style. Along with Jean-Jacques Beineix and Leos Carax, he helped define the movement. Some critics argued these directors favored style over narrative substance. Besson, however, saw his work as a different kind of revolution. He believed filmmakers should focus on improving the look of movies. His early films, such as Subway (1985) and La Femme Nikita (1990), are key examples. These works helped establish his reputation for visual storytelling.

His films have achieved massive commercial and cultural success. The film Le Grand Bleu (1988) became a "film générationnel," or a defining cultural moment. It sold 10 million tickets in France. He also won awards for The Fifth Element (1997), a sci-fi action film. This movie was inspired by French comic books from his teenage years. In 2014, he directed Lucy, which earned $469 million worldwide. This made it the most successful French feature film ever. Another film, Taken 2, became the largest-grossing export French film.

Making large-scale films involves significant financial risks. The film Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) had a budget of about $180 million. This made it the most expensive European and independent film ever made. However, the film faced difficulties with critics in China. These financial challenges led to near bankruptcy for his company, EuropaCorp. Despite these setbacks, Besson has continued to experiment with new methods. He directed Dogman (2023) using a virtual production facility. He also shot June & John (2025) using only smartphones and a small crew.

Besson's career shows how filmmaking connects to technology and personal resilience. He has moved from traditional sets to virtual environments. He has even used mobile technology to create cinema during lockdowns. His work continues to evolve through different genres and tools. Whether directing fantasy, action, or drama, he remains a major figure in French cinema. His ability to adapt has allowed him to stay active for decades. From his early days as an assistant to his modern productions, his focus remains on the power of the image.
