He is known for making movies that look amazing and feel exciting. He has worked on more than 50 different films. Some of his movies are about space, while others are about action. He even wrote a series of fantasy books for children. People love his work because it is often very visual. He wants his movies to be pleasurable and convincing to watch. This passion for images has guided his whole career.

Besson's journey into movies started from a big change in his life. As a boy, he traveled to places like Italy and Greece. His parents were scuba-diving instructors, so he wanted to be a marine biologist. However, a diving accident at age 17 meant he could no longer dive. He sat down and made a list of things he could do. He realized he loved writing and taking pictures. He decided to go to a movie set to learn the craft. Soon, he left school to pursue his dream of making films.

His career began to grow in the 1980s. He worked as an assistant to directors like Claude Faraldo. He also made short films and commercials to learn the ropes. In 1980, he started his own company called Les Films du Loup. Later, he changed the name to Les Films du Dauphin. He eventually co-founded a large studio called EuropaCorp in the year 2000. This studio helped him try to compete with big American film companies. He wanted to keep many French workers busy making movies.

Besson is a key part of a style called Cinéma du look. This movement started in the 1980s and lasted into the 1990s. It focuses on a very specific, beautiful look for movies. His films Subway (1985) and The Big Blue (1988) are great examples. He also won awards for his sci-fi film The Fifth Element (1997). That movie was inspired by French comic books he read as a teen. His film Lucy (2014) became a huge success around the world. It earned 469 million dollars, which was a record for French films.

Making movies can be a hard job with many ups and downs. Some of his big movies, like Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), cost a lot of money to make. Even when his company faced money troubles, he kept creating. He recently made a movie called Dogman (2023) using special technology. He even shot a film called June & John using only smartphones. In 2025, he released a version of Dracula that did very well. He shows that being creative can happen in many different ways.
