The Dardenne brothers are a famous filmmaking duo from Belgium. Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne work together to write, produce, and direct their movies. They focus on stories about real life in modern Europe. Their films often look at people living on the edges of society. This includes immigrants and people looking for jobs. They want to show the lives of the working class.

Their movies help people feel and see the world through different eyes.

Making a film with the brothers is a very physical process. They do not like to use heavy lighting or big setups. Instead, they often use handheld cameras to follow the action. This makes the movie feel more natural and real. When they work with actors, they do something quite special. They often start working without a camera or sound crew present. The brothers walk the actors through their movements first. They might even have the actors say lines without actually acting them. This helps the actors find new ways to move and feel.

The brothers grew up in a place called Seraing in Belgium. Jean-Pierre was born in 1951 and studied drama. Luc was born in 1954 and studied philosophy. In 1975, they started a company called Derives. They made about sixty documentary films before they began making stories. These early films covered topics like Polish immigration and a strike in 1960. Later, in 1994, they started their own company called Les Films du Fleuve. This company produces all of their movies and helps other European directors too.

Their films have won many of the biggest prizes in cinema. They won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival twice. They won it first for the film Rosetta in 1999. They won it again in 2005 for the film L'Enfant. This made them part of a very small group of filmmakers. Their film Lorna's Silence won Best Screenplay in 2008. The Kid with a Bike won the Grand Prix in 2011. In 2015, the film Two Days, One Night earned an Academy Award nomination for actress Marion Cotillard.

You might recognize their work through the many awards they receive. Their film Young Ahmed won Best Director in 2019. Their movie Tori and Lokita won a special prize in 2022. They also work with a regular team of helpers. This includes cinematographer Alain Marcoen and editor Marie-Hélène Dozo. Many of the same actors appear in several of their films. For example, Jérémie Renier has acted in La Promesse, L'Enfant, and Lorna's Silence. Their work continues to be a major part of modern filmmaking.
