She uses her movies to tell important stories about life. Her work often shows the everyday lives of people in the Middle East. She cares deeply about topics like poverty, war, and feminism. Labaki believes that cinema can be a tool to create real change in the world. She wants her films to make people think and feel hope. By touching hearts, she hopes to shake people out of being bored or indifferent to big problems.

Making a Labaki film involves a very special way of working. She often uses non-professional actors for her parts. These are real people who do not act as a job. She finds them living in the actual neighborhoods shown on the screen. For her movie Capernaum, she spent three years researching the lives of children. She even found the lead actor, Zain Al Rafeea, playing with friends in a slum. This style helps her movies feel very organic and realistic. She also likes to act in her own films to help the cast feel comfortable.

Labaki's journey into storytelling began long ago in Lebanon. She was born in Baabdat to parents named Antoine and Antoinette. Her uncle was a hakawati, which is a traditional storyteller. Her grandfather even owned a small theatre. Growing up, she lived through the Lebanese Civil War for seventeen years. This difficult time shaped how she sees the world. She later studied audiovisual studies at Saint Joseph University in Beirut. She also attended an acting workshop at the Cours Florent in Paris.

Her career has reached many wonderful milestones. Her first feature film, Caramel, came out in 2006 and was a big success. In 2011, her film Where Do We Go Now? won a prize at the Toronto International Film Festival. Her third film, Capernaum, was a massive achievement. It was released in 2018 and was selected for the Cannes Film Festival. Most importantly, Labaki became the first female Arab director nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. This was a very historic moment for filmmakers in the Arab world.

Labaki's work connects different parts of the world together. She uses her films to bridge the gap between the Arab world and the West. Her stories about women show how they handle hard realities caused by political trouble. Even when she films about serious things like the refugee crisis, she often includes humor. She shows that even in hard times, people find ways to laugh. Her films do not always provide easy answers to big problems. Instead, they act as a way for her to revolt against unfairness through art.
