It is the tallest sand dune in all of Europe. You can find it in France along the Atlantic coast. It sits in a place called La Teste-de-Buch. This is near the Arcachon Bay area. The dune is a foredune. This means it runs parallel to the shoreline. It stays behind the high tide line of the beach.

This massive mound of sand is always changing. It has a huge volume of about 60,000,000 cubic meters. The dune is 2.7 km long from north to south. It is also 500 m wide from east to west. In 2018, its height was 106.60 m above sea level. The dune moves slowly toward the land. It pushes against the forest and even covers roads. It can even push against houses and the Atlantic Wall.

People have studied this place for a long time. Old maps from 1708 and 1786 show the sand was elsewhere. Back then, the area called Pilat was south and off-shore. The land where the dune sits now had a different name. It was called "Les Sabloneys," or "The New Sands." A developer named Daniel Meller renamed it in the 1930s. The name Pilat comes from the Gascon word Pilhar. This word means a heap or a mound.

There is much history hidden beneath the sand. Long ago, people held camps at this site. They did work related to mining sea salt. In 1922, people began making archaeological discoveries there. A tourist found an old funeral urn in 2013. They also found an accessory vase from the Iron Age. These items were from 800 years BC. In 2014, ten amateur archaeologists worked for two weeks. They wanted to study these finds in the sand.
