Mount Etna is a massive and active volcano.

It sits on the east coast of Sicily, Italy. It is located between the cities of Messina and Catania. This volcano is one of the tallest active ones in Europe. It is also the tallest peak in Italy south of the Alps. Its height changes when it erupts. For example, the southeastern crater reached a certain height in 2021. However, the Voragine crater became taller after eruptions in the summer of 2024.

This volcano works in a few different ways. Most of its activity happens at the very top. There are five distinct craters at the summit. These include the Northeast Crater and the Voragine. Other eruptions happen on the sides of the mountain. These are called flank eruptions. They can happen at different heights. Some flank eruptions happen very close to where people live. Since the year 1600, there have been at least 60 flank eruptions. Nearly half of these have happened since the year 2000.

People have wondered about Etna for a very long time. Some believe the name comes from a Greek word meaning "to burn." Others think it comes from a word meaning "furnace" or "chimney." Ancient stories told of gods living under the mountain. Greek and Roman myths said the blacksmith god Vulcan had his forge there. Some legends even spoke of King Arthur. Stories said his kingdom was hidden deep under the volcano.

Scientists can look at the mountain to learn about the past. Volcanic activity first began about 500,000 years ago. At first, eruptions happened under the sea. About 170,000 years ago, eruptions built the first major part of the mountain. This type of volcano is called a stratovolcano. A long time ago, a huge part of the mountain collapsed. This created a large depression called Valle del Bove.

This valley helps researchers study the history of the eruptions.

Even though the volcano is active, it helps the land. The volcanic activity creates very fertile soil. This soil is great for farming. People grow vineyards and orchards on the lower slopes. They also grow food on the Plain of Catania to the south. Because it is so important, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also a Decade Volcano. This means the United Nations watches it closely.
