It sits in the Canary Islands within the Atlantic Ocean. The summit reaches 3,715 meters above sea level. This makes it the highest point in all of Spain.

If you measure from the very bottom on the ocean floor, it is even taller. It reaches a total height of 7,500 meters. This makes Teide the third-tallest volcanic structure on Earth.

The mountain grew through many steps over a long time. First, shield volcanoes formed the main part of Tenerife. These volcanoes had fluid lava that spread out wide.

Later, a volcano called Las Cañadas began to form. About 200,000 years ago, a giant landslide swept away its peak. This left a large, horseshoe-shaped hole called a caldera.

Teide then grew inside this caldera. It is a stratovolcano, which means it is built of many layers. The summit even has a small cone called El Pitón.

Long ago, the native Guanches people lived on the island. They saw the mountain as a very sacred place.

They believed a powerful figure named Guayota lived inside. Guayota was often shown as a black dog. The Guanches thought the mountain held up the sky. To scare away evil spirits, they would light big bonfires. This is similar to how other cultures view volcanoes. For example, Hawaiians tell stories about a goddess named Pele.

Teide is an active volcano with a busy history. Its last eruption happened in late 1909 at the El Chinyero vent.

Because it is near towns like Garachico, experts watch it closely. The United Nations calls it a Decade Volcano. This means it is a site for special study. The Teide National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2024, the park set a record with 5,242,653 visitors. It is one of the most visited parks in Europe.

The weather on the mountain changes a lot. High up, the air is much different than at the beach.

An inversion layer keeps the mountain dry and warm. In the summer, it can reach 30 °C. In the winter, it can drop to -15 °C.

Sometimes, clouds form a ring around the peak. Sailors called this the "hat of Teide." This special weather makes the mountain a great place for science. The Teide Observatory sits on its slopes to look at the stars.
