Etna is almost always busy with activity. This activity makes the soil very fertile. This means the soil is great for growing food. People grow grapes and fruit in orchards on the lower slopes.

Most eruptions happen at the top of the mountain. There are five different craters at the summit. Other eruptions can happen on the sides, called flanks. These flank eruptions can be closer to towns and villages. Since the year 1600, there have been at least 60 flank eruptions. Long ago, a huge part of the mountain collapsed. This created a large valley called Valle del Bove.

This valley helps us study the history of the volcano. The mountain is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a place of great importance to the world.
