It is home to Mount Stromboli. This is one of four active volcanoes in Italy. The volcano is always active. It has small eruptions very often. People call it the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean."

This is because the volcano glows in the dark. The volcano has two active craters at the top. These craters have many vents. Vents are small openings where gas and lava come out. The volcano has erupted for thousands of years. It has a special way of erupting. Scientists call this a Strombolian eruption. These eruptions send out bright, hot rocks. These rocks are called volcanic bombs. They shoot up hundreds of meters into the air.

Most eruptions are small bursts. Sometimes, lava flows out of the volcano too. On the side of the mountain, there is a big dip. It is shaped like a horseshoe. This area is called the Sciara del Fuoco. This means "stream of fire." About 500 people live on the island in small villages.
