It sits near the city of Naples. The volcano has a special shape. It has a large cone. This cone sits inside a steep rim. This rim is a caldera. A caldera is a large hole left when a mountain collapses.

How did it form? Two big pieces of the Earth met. These are called tectonic plates. The African plate moved under the Eurasian plate. This pushed rocks deep into the Earth. The heat melted the rocks into magma. This magma is hot, liquid rock. Because it is light, it pushed upward. It broke through the surface to make the volcano.

In 79 AD, Vesuvius had a huge eruption. It sent out ash and gas. This event destroyed the city of Pompeii.
