Mount Pelée is a big, active volcano. It sits on the island of Martinique. The mountain is a stratovolcano. This means it is built from layers of hardened ash and lava.

This volcano is famous for a scary event. In 1902, it had a very large eruption. It destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre in just a few minutes. This was the worst volcanic disaster of the 1900s. Only three people were known to survive. One man stayed safe in a small jail cell. A young girl found safety in a sea cave.

Scientists study the volcano today. They look for signs of change. They watch for small shakes called earthquakes. These shakes can mean magma, or hot melted rock, is moving deep underground.

Many living things call the mountain home. A special type of frog lives only there. Many different birds also live in the forests. Because it is so special, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This means the world works to protect it.
