It sits on Sumbawa island. This mountain is a stratovolcano. That means it has a shape like steep layers.

The volcano forms because of subduction zones. This happens when one part of the Earth's crust slides under another.

In 1815, Mount Tambora had a massive eruption. It was the largest eruption in recorded history. The blast was so loud that people heard it far away. It even sent ash to islands like Borneo and Java.

The eruption sent out a lot of gas and ash. This changed the weather around the world. In 1816, people called it the "Year Without a Summer." This was because the air became much cooler.

Before the big blast, the mountain was very tall. After the eruption, the top was much lower. The explosion left a large, deep hole called a caldera.

Today, scientists still study the mountain. They watch for small changes or new flows of lava.
