A long time ago, a giant volcano erupted.

This happened on the island of Thera. Today, we call it Santorini. The eruption was one of the largest in human history. It happened around 1600 BC.

Before the big blast, the ground shook. Earthquakes likely damaged homes. A small layer of ash fell first. This gave people a few months to leave.

Because people fled, no human remains were found at the town of Akrotiri.

The eruption had many parts. First, the volcano blew out huge clouds of ash. This is called a Plinian eruption. It sent ash high into the sky.

Then, the volcano collapsed. This created a large, water-filled hole called a caldera.

The eruption also made huge sea waves. We call these waves tsunamis. They hit nearby islands and the coast of Crete. These waves were strong enough to knock down walls.
