It also looks at lava and magma. Magma is hot, melted rock underground. Scientists who do this work are called volcanologists. They visit active volcanoes to collect samples. They might pick up ash or lava.

One big goal is to predict eruptions. This can save many lives. Scientists use many tools to watch volcanoes. They use seismographs to listen for shakes. These shakes can show magma moving. They also use tiltmeters to see if the ground bulges. This happens when more magma moves up. Some tools can even sense gases. They look for sulfur dioxide. Satellites in space also help. They can see ash clouds from far away.
