Scientists look at what rocks are made of. They also study their texture. Texture is how the parts of a rock look and feel. There are three main types of rocks.

First are igneous rocks. These form from magma, which is melted rock. These rocks can be volcanic or plutonic.

Second are sedimentary rocks. These are made of small pieces. These pieces come from other rocks or living things. They are held together in a fine material.

Third are metamorphic rocks. These rocks change from heat or pressure. They can start as any kind of rock. This original rock is called a protolith.

Some experts use a special way called experimental petrology. They use tools to make very high heat and pressure. This helps them study rocks from deep inside the Earth. They can even study rocks from the Moon.
