earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Petrology is a specialized branch of geology focused on the study of rocks.

Scientists in this field examine the mineralogy and composition of various stones. They also look closely at the texture and structure of these materials. Beyond just looking at rocks, petrologists investigate the specific conditions under which they form. This deep study helps us understand the complex history of our planet. By analyzing rocks, we learn about the physical processes that shape the Earth.

To understand rocks, petrologists use several scientific methods. They rely on mineralogy to identify the specific minerals within a sample. They also use petrography to study the microscopic details of a rock.

This often requires looking at a thin section of a rock under a microscope. Additionally, they use chemical analysis to determine exactly what substances are present. Some experts even include geophysics and geochemistry in their work. They use thermodynamic data and experiments to trace geochemical cycles and trends.

Petrology is divided into three main branches based on rock types. The first is igneous petrology, which focuses on rocks like granite or basalt. These rocks form when molten rock, known as magma, crystallizes into a solid. Igneous rocks are further categorized as either volcanic or plutonic. The second branch is sedimentary petrology. This field studies rocks like sandstone, shale, or limestone. These rocks are made of particles from other rocks or biological and chemical deposits. These particles are usually held together in a matrix of finer material.

The third branch is metamorphic petrology. This branch studies rocks such as marble, slate, gneiss, or schist. These rocks change due to high temperature, high pressure, or both. The original rock that undergoes these changes is called a protolith. Any type of rock can serve as a protolith before it transforms. This transformation changes the rock's mineralogy, texture, or chemical makeup. Because of this, metamorphic petrology is often taught alongside igneous petrology. Both fields rely heavily on chemistry and the use of phase diagrams.

Some scientists specialize in experimental petrology to learn more about the deep Earth. These researchers use special apparatus to create very high temperatures and pressures.

This technique allows them to study the geochemistry and phase relations of materials. It is especially useful for studying the lower crust and the upper mantle. Rocks from these deep areas rarely reach the surface in pristine condition. Experimental petrology also provides information about the mantles of the Moon and other terrestrial planets. This work provides the foundation for our modern understanding of how rocks form.

There are important distinctions between terms like lithology and petrography. In general use, lithology refers to describing rocks at a macroscopic scale. This means looking at large hand-samples or entire outcrops. Petrography, however, is the specialty that deals with microscopic details. In the petroleum industry, lithology has a more specific meaning. Workers use a process called mud logging to represent geological formations. As drilling occurs, cuttings are circulated out of the borehole. These cuttings are sampled and examined under a 10x microscope. They may also be tested chemically to understand the formation.

Petrology connects many different scientific disciplines together. It combines the study of physical matter with the study of chemical changes. The field uses the principles of geochemistry to understand the origins of rocks. It also uses geophysics to understand the Earth's physical properties.

Notable figures have contributed to this field, such as Ljudmila Dolar Mantuani. She was the first female professor of petrography in Yugoslavia. Her work represents the long history of dedicated scientists studying the Earth's composition. Through these various branches, petrology helps us map the history of our world.
