Scientists who do this work are called seismologists. They use tools called seismometers to feel the ground move. These tools make a record called a seismogram.

When an earthquake happens, it sends out waves. There are two main types of waves that travel through the inside of the Earth. These are called body waves. The first is the P wave. P waves move the fastest. They are always the first to show up on a record. The second is the S wave. These move more slowly. S waves can only travel through solid rock. They cannot move through liquid. This fact helped scientists learn that the outer core is liquid.

Other waves travel along the surface of the Earth. These are called surface waves. They move more slowly than body waves. However, they can cause very strong shaking. Large earthquakes can even make the whole Earth ring like a bell. This ringing can last for a month. Seismology helps us find old craters from space. It also helps us warn people about tsunamis.
