A tsunami is a series of large waves.

The word comes from Japanese. It means "harbour wave." These waves are not like normal waves. Wind makes normal waves. But a tsunami happens when a large amount of water is moved.

Many things can move the water. An earthquake is a common cause. This happens when the sea floor moves suddenly. Volcanic eruptions can also cause them. Sometimes, a landslide or a meteorite hit can move the water too.

Out in the deep ocean, these waves are small. They might look like a slight swell. But they have a very long wavelength. This means the distance between waves is very large. When the waves reach shallow water, they change. They slow down and grow much taller.

A tsunami may look like a fast rising tide. It can be very destructive to coasts. In 2004, a huge tsunami hit the Indian Ocean. It killed or displaced at least 230,000 people.

Scientists still study them today. They want to learn how to predict them better.
